Spank Spike Pedals vs Superstar Nano Tech Flats
I’ve been hunting around for some pedals for my Transition TR450 that I will be building up soon. Ideally the bike should handle plenty of abuse but still be reasonably light. Of course price is always a factor, so sometimes I need to settle for something of lesser quality than I really want.
I’d pretty much resided myself to the fact that I’d be running Superstar Nano Tech Flats. I wanted a slim but wide design, lightweight, in blue and reasonably priced. Since I wanted blue pedals, already my options were limited, the Superstars ticked basically every other criteria. Straitlines seem more durable, and around my “upper price limit”, but they are a pretty heavy pedal too.
My only gripe with the Superstars is that they seem a little soft. One or two knocks on some rocks and the anodizing has well and truly been ground off. My wife ran them last year, and while they did the job and still work fine, they are looking a bit worse for wear. Standard they weigh 446g, but spending an extra £39.98 on the Superstars will drop the weight down to 375g.
Although they haven’t been released for sale yet, I’m really interested in Spank’s 2011 release of the “Spike” pedals. Not only do they look great, it’s looking like they will be quite light (around 400g), and more durable than many of the other pedals out there.
Here’s some comparisons:
Spank Spike | Superstar Nano Tech Flat | |
Price | $USD119 | £43 + £5 S&H (approx USD$80) |
Weight | 400g | 446g |
Thickness | 14mm | 17mm |
Please note that the information above may not be 100% accurate. I have done by best to gather information from the internet on the Spank pedals.
The Spank Spike pedals are due for release during Spring this year. I’m hoping it’s earlier rather than later!
